12-Lead EKG
This is a one-day course designed for health care providers who require
basic knowledge of 12-Lead electrocardiography analysis and interpretation.
Course content includes lead placement, normal axis, axis deviation, and
changes related to heart disease. Successful completion of Basic Dysrhythmia
is a prerequisite.
Adult Physical Assessment
This 3-day course is designed for nurses who provide patient care to the adult
population. The course content includes physical assessment of each body system,
identification of variances seen within the adult population, and the use of
assessment tools such as an otoscope. This participatory course is designed with
a clinical focus intended to maximize the learning experience through hands-on
learning.
This is a 10-day class designed to enhance nursing knowledge and sharpen skills
of the LVN. The target participant works at the bedside in an acute care
facility. The course will cover content related to LVN roles and
responsibilities, scope of practice, being a team member, critical thinking, use
of the nursing process, medication and blood administration, care of the medical
patient, post surgery care, recognizing early and late signs of distress.
This course is designed for nurses who care for monitored patients. Course
content includes anatomy and physiology of the cardiac system,
electrocardiography, recognition of Normal Sinus Rhythm and basic cardiac
dysrhythmias. This course will cover treatment of dysrhythmias including
medication therapy, and nursing intervention.
This is a 6-day course that
will cover the basic components of Labor & Delivery Nursing. The
course is designed for licensed nursing staff who work in a labor & delivery
setting. Topics covered in the course will include: Overview of Labor,
Gestational Diabetes, Bleeding in Pregnancy, Pregnancy Induced Hypertension,
Induction and Augmentation, Newborn Assessment, Teen Pregnancy, Cesarean
Section and Surgical responsibilities of the Nurse, Pain Management,
Breastfeeding Initiation and Benefits, and Pharmacology in Obstetrics.
This course is designed for the Registered
Nurse with minimal or no operating room experience. Course content will
cover all aspects of care during the operative occurrence. Emphasis will
focus on nursing functions required during the intra-operative phase, such
as scrubbing and circulating general surgical cases.
Blood Withdrawal - IV Certification for LVNs
This class is designed for LVN’s who
work in patient care areas that require blood withdrawal and intravenous
infusions. The course will cover anatomy of the circulatory system, venipuncture
techniques, IV and venipuncture devices, regulating and monitoring infusions,
maintenance of fluids and electrolytes, and complications from IV’s.
This is a four-part series of
classes discussing management of the psychiatric patient. This course is
designed to enhance learner knowledge when caring for the patient with
Cognitive Disorders. Each one-day session will integrate knowledge related
to violence, impulse control, psychotropic medications, documentation,
elopement, suicidal and sexual precautions.
Enhancing Critical Thinking
Skills
This 1-day/8-hour
course for RNs and advanced LVNs is designed to strengthen critical thinking
skills and optimize effective clinical decision-making in a variety of
healthcare settings. The workshop will use an interactive case study
approach, to identify clinical needs, anticipate expected treatment outcomes
and possible complications, and initiate therapeutic interventions.
Fetal Monitoring
This is a two-day course
designed for nurses working with obstetrical patients who require fetal
monitoring. This course will discuss indications for fetal monitoring,
identification and management of various Fetal Heart Rates (FHR), and legal
issues associated with Fetal monitoring.
Fluids and Electrolytes
This is a one-day class
designed to educate the nurse about fluid and electrolyte balance. The content
of the class will cover a brief review of anatomy and physiology of the
circulatory system, normal electrolyte ranges, and signs and symptoms associated
with high and low electrolyte levels, treatment options, and nursing
interventions.
Monitor Tech
This is a five-day
course designed for unlicensed employees who currently work on a unit with
monitored patients. Course content includes roles and responsibilities of the
Monitor Tech, anatomy and physiology of the cardiac system, electrocardiography
interpretation, recognition of Normal Sinus Rhythm and basic cardiac
dysrhythmias.
NCLEX Review for RNs and LVNS
Nurses who are board eligible to take
the NCLEX exam may take HCWDP’s NCLEX test preparation and review classes. These
review courses are designed to go beyond refreshing your memory and teaching you
how to take a test.
Newborn Physical Assessment
This three-day course is designed for nurses who work in clinical settings with
newborn and neonatal patients. The focus of this course is to provide the nurse
with the knowledge required to conduct a physical assessment on the newborn and
neonatal patient. The class will highlight normal development, appearance,
review of the body systems, recognition of abnormal signs and symptoms, and
proper assessment techniques. There are no prerequisites for this class.
Pediatric Physical Assessment
This 4-day course is designed for nurses who provide patient care to the
pediatric patient. The course is designed to educate nurses about physical
assessment techniques and normal findings associated with various ages. The
course highlights normal growth and development, appearance, and measurements
specific to different pediatric age groups. Since this class is clinically
focused, please be sure to bring your stethoscope. There are no prerequisites
for this course.
Triage Nursing
This two-day course is designed for nurses
working in an emergency or urgent care setting. Course content will include
patient interviewing and assessment in the triage area, prioritizing patient
care into categories such as emergent, urgent and non-urgent requirements. The
course will highlight identification of emergent, life-threatening illnesses and
injuries.

In collaboration with accredited
programs, HCWDP offers part-time nursing programs for employees who wish to
advance in their careers. Employees enrolled in programs leading to licensure
are eligible to receive one day of Training Time per week during the course of
the program.
Vocational Nursing
This program is open to all job classifications
and does not require any prerequisite classes. It is an 18-month part-time
program with classes scheduled four days a week. Candidates must have either a
U.S. high school diploma or a U.S. GED certificate. Candidates must take an
entrance examination and score at a minimum of 9th grade in Math and 10th grade
in English.
HCWDP offers three types of programs leading towards the registered nursing
license. All programs require candidates to take an entrance examination and
score at 12th grade level or above in reading and math.
Generic RN class
This is a two-year program. Employees from all job classifications are
encouraged to apply for this program.
LVN to RN program
For LVNs who are ready to advance into an RN program, HCWDP offers a 15-month
program.
30-Unit RN Option
This 15 month program is for LVNs who have worked for DHS for fifteen years or
more in clinical settings. The license granted to graduates in this program
limits nursing practice to California. The required science prerequisites are
Human Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology and are all provided by HCWDP.
Preceptor Training
This class teaches the art of becoming an effective preceptor. Instruction
includes teaching and learning styles, and expectations of a preceptor.
Psychiatric Technician Program
HCWDP is planning a
Psychiatric Technician Certificate Course to meet the demand for skilled
technicians in DHS inpatient settings. (Applicants with nursing
experience within psychiatry might qualify for a shorter program.) This
could be a promotional training opportunity for nursing
attendants, custodians, institutional helpers, as well as a variety of
administrative and support personnel. A Psychiatric Technician (Psych
Tech) is a critical front-line technician providing physical and mental
health services to patients affected by mental, emotional, and
developmental disabilities. Psych Techs collaborate with other members
of a team providing crisis intervention, basic nursing care, and
medication therapy, while assisting clinicians with therapeutic support.
Licensed by the State Board of Vocational Nurses and Psychiatric
Technicians, they provide patient care under the supervision of
physicians, registered nurses, and other allied health professionals.
Interested individuals must meet the following criteria: possess a High
School Diploma or GED, possess strong written and spoken communication
skills, have a strong desire to improve the quality of life for clients
with mental health issues. Desirable qualifications include: experience
interacting with the developmentally disabled or mentally ill, position
requires arduous physical activity.
Nursing Instructor Training Course
HCWDP is offering an opportunity for registered nurses with a Bachelor of
Science in Nursing to become instructors. This course will provide you with a
background in adult learning theory and teaching methods.

Medical Terminology
This competency-based course develops the ability to understand the language of
medicine through examining word building, analysis of terms, pronunciation, and
spelling. It provides practice in the use of a medical dictionary and other
medical reference books.

Certified Coding Specialist
The
L.A. Health Care Workforce Development Program is offering a Certified
Coding Specialist Workshop in Health Information Technology Coding. This
3-day workshop prepares participants to take the American Health Information
Management Association’s (AHIMA) official Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
exam. The Workshop covers ICD-9 coding procedures, assesses your speed in
answering coding questions, gives exposure to outpatient reports and covers
coding rules for a wide array of surgical procedures.
Medical Records Coder
This program will be provided through
East Los Angeles College or an accredited coding program. This program is
designed to prepare participants to code and abstract health records in
hospitals and other health care facilities using the International
Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification, Current Procedural
Terminology, and other current classification systems. The program is
approximately 18 months.
Health Information
Technician
This training opportunity is for current Medical Records Coders in the
Department of Health Services. The program will be provided through East Los
Angeles College. This program is designed to enhance the skills/knowledge base
of existing Medical Coders and assist them in qualifying to sit for the
Registered Health Information Technician Exam. The program is approximately 18
months.
Phlebotomy Re-Certification
This course is designed to fulfill the mandatory minimum 20-hour phlebotomy
re-certification which is required by the State of California. We urge all
current DHS employees who draw blood and are required to be re-certified by the
state to sign up for this course. HCWDP will cover the cost of the course and
certification exam for qualified employees.
Radiology Training Interest Survey
The HCWDP is interested in offering training opportunities to DHS Radiology
Technologists in the following areas: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI),
Fluoroscopy, Mammography and, Diagnostic Ultrasound. If you are interested in

activities are centered around active participation. Language skills
are practiced through interaction and group activities. The course
content is based on health care vocabulary and situations.

Microsoft Office Suite Mini-Courses
These 2 hour courses combine lecture and
hands-on learning. Participants will learn about the basic and
in-depth functions of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Internet
Fundamentals & E-mail Basics. Learn what these programs do, as well as,
terminology, usage, troubleshooting, window navigation and editing skills.
Excel I: Spreadsheets, Workbooks & Toolbars
Microsoft Excel
is a powerful spreadsheet program that you can use to efficiently
evaluate and revise data, calculate and compare numbers, and create
reports. This class is designed for beginning users of Excel, and
will review the “basic” concepts of this application to enable the
student to effectively produce a workable spreadsheet. Students
will learn to navigate a workbook through utilizing and
understanding toolbars. Knowledge of label and values, formulas,
functions, formatting and editing will be obtained thru hands-on
practice. These new skills will be put to use in class to create
and format an actual report which will be used to enter and analyze
data. Along with the basic elements, imbedded in the course will be
tips and tricks to help users become more proficient and productive
with the Excel product.
Excel II: Create Formulas, Charts & Lists
Microsoft Excel is a powerful
spreadsheet program that you can use to efficiently evaluate and
revise data, calculate and compare numbers, and create reports. This
class is designed for intermediate users of Excel. During
these four 2-hour sessions, students will learn to create and modify
charts, work with lists, sort and filter data, calculate with
advanced formulas, create and apply a name for a range of cells,
calculate across worksheets, calculate with financial functions,
calculate with date and time functions, calculate with statistical
functions, calculate with look-up and reference functions,
understand the function categories and three-dimensional cell
reference. This course utilizes a variety of media to provide
the student with a diverse and unique opportunity to learn how to
increase productivity in the workplace, and proficiently use this
software.
PowerPoint I:
Slides for Audio-Visual
Presentations
This powerful
presentation program allows users to create a variety of visually
appealing slides and audio-visual aids for presentations. This
class is designed for beginning users of PowerPoint, as well as
users who have had experience in earlier presentation programs.
Students will understand the PowerPoint window and toolbars as they
open, view, and navigate through existing slideshows and create a
unique PowerPoint presentation. In this course, we will review the
outline, design, layout and animation of slides as well as study
professional presentation techniques. Embedded in this course will
be tips and tricks to help users be more comfortable, proficient,
and productive with the PowerPoint application.
Word I:
Create, Modify and Format
documents
This word
processing program allows you to efficiently create, modify and
format documents. This class is designed for beginning users of
word processing and will review the “basic” concepts of this
application. Students will learn to utilize and understand the
toolbars to create, format, edit, and print a professional
document. In addition to practicing these basic elements, imbedded
in the course will be tips and tricks to help users become more
proficient and productive when using Word.
Typing
Skills Enhancement
This course is
designed to build or enhance keyboarding techniques and fundamental
skills to improve keyboarding speed and accuracy. The course objective
is to develop and improve typing abilities to successfully work towards
achieving a typing goal of 40 net words per minute.
