The Los Angeles Health Care Workforce Development Program (HCWDP) offers programs to assist County of Los Angeles Department of Health Services (DHS) employees in becoming a Registered Nurse (RN).

 

In collaboration with accredited programs, HCWDP offers part-time nursing programs for employees who whish to advance in their careers. Employees enrolled in programs leading to licensure are eligible to receive one day Training Time per week during the course of the program.

Applicants will be required to take an assessment to determine readiness to enter one of the nursing programs listed below:

 

  • RN (Generic) – Two year program for individuals from various classifications to become Registered Nurses (RN). No nursing experience is required. An Associate Degree in Nursing is received upon completion of the program.

  • LVN to RN – One year program for current Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN) who want to become Registered Nurses (RN). An Associate Degree in Nursing is received upon completion of the program.

  • LVN to RN 30 Unit Option – One year program for LVN’s which doesn’t require taking all the general education pre-requisite courses, only Physiology & Microbiology. Individuals do not receive an Associate Degree in Nursing at the end of the program, and are typically limited to practicing in the State of California.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:

  • Eligible candidates must be full-time, permanent employees of DHS for at least six months

  • Your item must be represented by SEIU Local 721

  • The RN classification must be promotional from your current job classification

  • HCWDP will cover the costs of tuition (not covered by the college tuition assistance program), books and supplies

  • Some classes may require the use of your own time

  • You will need to sign an authorization form releasing information to HCWDP from the college on your attendance and performance

  • You will need to sign a Participant Agreement to work in an acute care setting providing direct patient care for at least two years with DHS following receipt of your RN license

  • There may be additional requirements in connection with the application and selection processes
